ASA what is the asa rule for a foul tip caught by the catcher Slowpitch Softball Forums SoftballFans com

Double-play turns for lefty middle infielders are nearly impossible. Left-handed catchers are seen occasionally in college softball but it’s rare. As a softball player, no matter what position you’re playing, you can never get enough practice. As a catcher, you’ll want to practice slow pitch softball pitching machine throwing drills when possible. The catcher’s footwork needs to be quick and strong to pop up fast and hit the target directly. When coaching and mentoring young little league baseball players, there are a lot of unique fundamentals that must be taught to each position.

If the drag foot lifts off the ground, an illegal pitch will be called for crow hopping. In this case, the batter is awarded with one ball to the count, and all base runners advance to the next base. In international play – and in most men’s leagues – the pitcher is allowed to jump with the pivot foot.

And not only will you likely fly out, but since the bat is going through the zone like a wet noodle, your likelihood of hitting the ball squarely goes down substantially. It’ll be going through the zone at an angle and you’ll likely hit the bottom or upper third of the ball and hit a sissy fly ball or ground ball that Grandma could catch. I mentioned this in the very beginning when I was talking about swinging with an uppercut and matching the angle of the slow pitch softball coming down. It does make a bit of sense to swing up at the ball to hit it out of the park, right?

Cupping a bat is the process in which the end of the barrel is hollowed out to remove weight while maintaining length. This process creates a slightly more balanced feel to your swing and is especially effective on larger-barrel bats for increased swing speed. All Playoff games will be played with no time limit. This affects Junior, Intermediate, Major, and Senior leagues.

For this drill, pop up from your secondary stance, turn your feet as though you’re going to throw the ball, and have both of your feet land on the center line. There may be no more important skill for a catcher to have than the ability to properly block a pitch in the dirt and recover in time to make a quick throw to a base if necessary. The pitcher will then be able to correct the problem. The catcher has a front-row seat for each pitch, which makes them a real-time review tape.

Do not try to uppercut the ball as this will cause your bat head to drop through the zone. A downward angled swing will ultimately result in a level swing designed to cut the bottom third of the ball in order to get that 20-40° magical launch angle. Keep your weight back, stride, and explode toward the ball in one swift motion. None of this will help you if you don’t swing at strikes. And in an effort to not waste your time explaining what the strike zone is, I’ll let you go research that depending on your ASA or USSSA league. The rules do in fact change depending on the league, so check it out.

Yet, playing lots of positions with average skill isn’t better than playing a few really well. Be willing to learn and play other positions – it may keep you off the bench. If you need to improve your speed, be sure to get in the weight room!

Your batting stance really isn’t a huge deal as long as your comfortable and you’re in a good athletic position. The thing that can become a big deal however is where you setup in the box. For example, let’s say you’re in a USA league where the arc of the pitch is a bit higher. That means the ball can come into the strike zone a bit deeper. In this scenario, you would want to set further back in the box closer to the catcher.

Finally, be aware of how quickly players move around while batting. If possible, wait until they stop moving before reacting so that you aren’t distracted by their movements instead of focusing on catching fastballs. To become a promising catcher in softball, you need to have strong throwing skills and quick reflexes. You also need to be able to judge the speed and direction of the ball in flight, as well as anticipate where it will land.
