Free neighborhood arts fest with 200+ artists, three music stages, craft beer, and food. St. Patrick’s Day comes early with live music, Irish dancers, a craft beer tent, a “men in kilts” contest, food from local restaurants, and a mashed potato eating contest. Hot Doug’s (!) and Goose Island team up for a special day of live music, beer, Hot Doug’s food (!!!!), and a chance to party with Doug himself (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). In addition to the beer tasting, Boutsikakis will preside over a home brewing demonstration — a five-gallon barley wine-based brew made using locally grown centennial hops and elderberries.

I’ve been hearing about this being one of the best Hefes on the planet for a while – probably thanks to The Beerists. I don’t drink a lot of hefeweizen anymore, but this one lives up to its billing.

As in past years, Beer Under Glass at Garfield Park Conservatory, pictured here in 2013, will open the week of events. It was a sour that tasted like they extinguished the end of a burning tree branch in it. But I am intrigued and want more from this southern Illinois brewery. To me, most smoked beers taste like sitting on the wrong side of a campfire alit with chemically-treated faux logs. But the black coffee bitterness keeps the smoke as a supporting flavor, and the results are marvelous.

It is the “eureka” moment that beer and spirits producers try to replicate at industry parties, in advertising and on massive billboards when promoting their brands. Ads often feature a group of friends holding the latest new drink or established brand. The hope is that in real life, they’ll spend time talking about it too.

Prep the outdoor runways for local fashionistas, live bands, and plenty of sangria. Food trucks, chef demonstrations, live music, and an oyster shucking competition with local chefs. Support the troops with live music, drinks, a live auction, and a raffle benefitting the USO of Illinois. A smorgasbord of encased meats, live music, beer, and the crowning of a Sausage King. Taste (duh!) eats from the hood including Chicago-style pizza, ice cream, and gelato, plus live music.

Out of 59 entries in a wide range of categories, our eight judges chose nine beers for the final Best of Show judging. The Door County Beer Festival has added some big names in the Wisconsin food and beer world to this year’s event. Kyle Cherek, the host of Wisconsin Foodie, will return… May Saskatoon’s Wine, Spirits and Beer expo is back this May 24th, 25th and 26th at Prairieland Park . The Top of the Hops Grapes and Grains Festival will feature over 200 different liquor samples making this year’s event one of Saskatoon’s largest Beer, Wine and Spirit Expos. The savory patty and a rockin’ music lineup are in the spotlight for Roscoe Village’s 6th annual burger extravaganza. classic beer once brewed in detroit Saucy fun is what this 7th annual fest is all about! There will tasty slabs from top Chicago and national ribbers.

After taking four days away from any major responsibilities to drink beer, I found returning to life as usual pretty jarring, possibly due to the deletion of a year’s worth of brain cells in about 72 hours. So I’ve finally caught my breath long enough to start having daydreams about being back in that convention center, drinking world class beers one ounce at a time. So to fulfill my media obligations, I’ll avoid the simile-heavy narrative I had planned and give you an unsorted list of beer highlights from GABF 2015. Standing alone in a class of its own is the one and only Hyde Park Jazz Festival. This year’s fest features FREE admission, live music and dancing, tours of the magnificent Cathedral, authentic Greek food and pastries, beer, wine and much more. The barleywine is reminiscent of a more American interpretation of the English style, like a tamer Firestone Walker Sucaba. But the chocolate is unmistakable, and it adds a bittersweet richness onto this beer’s medium body. Look out for this when it comes to bottles, as it could become even more interesting and smooth as it ages. The brewery with roots the farthest outside of Illinois is Crabbie’s.
