Graduate students who are not in good academic standing for any reason are subject to probation and/or dismissal from further graduate study. Additionally, graduate students must meet all department academic standards which may be more stringent than the minimum set forth by the University. An intensive two-year concentrated program is most appropriate for students with strong undergraduate preparation in areas such as psychology, sociology, social work, or other related helping fields.

A counselor will personally contact you to set up your first appointment. They may call from a non-university phone number and if they leave a message, they will only identify themselves as calling from Oakland University. Generally, linguistics major uf you’ll meet with your counselor for one or two counseling sessions per week for a period of 5–14 weeks. You should plan to come to your first session a bit early to fill out a few forms in order to obtain necessary information.

Michigan now has provisions for Preliminary Authorizations for Employment as a School Counselor , which allows students to become employed after all coursework is completed except the internship and the elective. Preliminary Authorization for Employment expires after three years, at which time the master’s must have been completed. With the above coursework, students with valid Michigan teaching certificates can be endorsed in Guidance and Counseling on their teaching certificate. Before an applicant’s file can be reviewed for full program admission, all application documents must be received in Oakland University Graduate School by the semester deadlines listed below.

You may meet or connect by email or phone during open advising hours with any faculty member, even if they are not your assigned adviser. You can use this time to make course selections and discuss issues such as your professional development, research interests, licensure and professional involvement. Those students who are admitted and wish to receive program advising may contact a Department of Counseling faculty member during advising hours listed on the current schedule.

The ACCC offers no-cost guidance services to members of the community. The ACCC helps individuals who are considering a career change or are simply reviewing possible career options. Due to the ongoing pandemic, we are currently only offering individual sessions via GoogleMeet or Zoom.
