The USD Sanford School of Medicine is South Dakota’s medical school, dedicated to educating South Dakota students and serving the residents of the state with highly skilled medical professionals. Around 1,080 professionals are employed in the medical billing and coding field in South Dakota alone. While the number may not be as high as in other states, South Dakota has the highest concentration of medical billers and coders in the country, with 2.58 workers employed per every thousand jobs.

Upper class students live here and the apartments have a communal kitchen along with a living room. Parking garages are also available but with an additional cost. The halls altogether house 1,444 students and are located near the Fine Arts Center, the Wellness Center, School of Education, Muenster University Student Center and DakotaDome. Here at South Dakota Mines, our students are working to fill these demands by pursuing their bachelor’s degrees with us while also preparing for advanced studies in a wide range of pre-medicine healthcare programs. There are four residence halls inside the North Complex which are Beede, Mickelson, Richardson and Olson Halls.

“Because this school places so much weight on the interview and the advocacy of the interviewer for the applicant when admission decisions are made, I would suggest competent English language speakers.” Our mission is to prepare physicians of diverse backgrounds to become kind, skilled leaders in their chosen specialty with an emphasis on fulfilling the healthcare needs of our region. Physicians and surgeons diagnose and treat injuries or illnesses. Physicians examine patients; take medical histories; prescribe medications; and order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests. They counsel patients on diet, hygiene, and preventive healthcare. Surgeons operate on patients to treat injuries, such as broken bones; diseases, such as cancerous tumors; and deformities, such as cleft palates.

After the interview, the admission committee evaluates all the applicants and makes a decision about them at the next scheduled committee meeting.
